A stumbling path

At some point, twenty-five or so years ago, I began to realize that the “language” that we have come to use to describe ourselves and all that is around us is itself responsible for that which it seeks to describe.

This beginning was set out in the following papers:

pdf document Lost for Words - an exploration of the Buddhist wisdom of emptiness and the philosophy of 'deep ecology, Mandala, Spring 1997 (originally given as a lecture to the Temenos Academy, Nov1996)
pdf document Stillness and Dancing: Some Thoughts on Sustainability. Temenos Academy, Spring 2000.

It soon became clear to me that we could only make a change by using a different “language”, as the language of convention would always bring us back to where we are. It also became clear to me that the only way to find a new language was to practice a new way of being. In my case, this led me to study (and try to practice) the ways of being described by the Buddha – both in daily life and in mediation. I also explored some of our own legends and traditions, our heritage of stories. This work is reflected in:

pdf document The King Who Lost His Memory
pdf document Three Stories
pdf document A Necessary Simplicity, Resurgence, 2002
pdf document With Our Thoughts We Make The World, A Sacred Trust, Temenos Academy, 2002.
pdf document Eternal Wisdom in an Age of Illusion, The Annual Bahái’I Lecture, University of Maryland, USA, 2003.

And then, I produced four papers that reflected my birthright as a Quaker:

pdf document Peace Talk: Some comments on war and peace (The Friends Quarterly, January 2006)
pdf document Common Prayer: A Quaker’s experience of Orthodoxy (Unpublished)
pdf document A Point of Light: A Quaker’s experience of the Brahma Kumaris (publication pending)
pdf document What We Believe In Matters (Unpublished)

More recently, I have published papers that take my work more deeply into the realm of Love and The Holy Life:

pdf document The Roots of Sustainability (to be published by The Prince’s Foundation of the Built Environment)
pdf document Divine Abiding and The Holy Life (to be published by The Friends Journal)
pdf document Holy Work: Thoughts from The Bhagavad Gita (unpublished)
