The first of my two consultancies, Property Market Analysis, was established in the early 1980s with my greatest friend, Richard Barras. We were later joined in partnership by Carol Wright and a wonderful team of young analysts, some of whom have now grown to be partners of the firm – a firm that leads the way throughout Europe and, indeed, now globally in the analysis and forecasting of commercial property markets. I retired from PMA in 1997 but remain a consultant to them.

The second consultancy Upstream, is a strategic sustainability consultancy with a special focus on the property sector. Until recently, I was the chairman of the company, which is managed by two remarkable young women, Sarah Ratcliffe and Julie Hirigoyen who are supported by a young team who are both knowledgeable and passionate about sustainability. They all believe that the built environment has a crucial role to play in shaping a sustainable future and they aim to help their clients – all of whom work with property – to manage the economic, social and environmental issues that they face in ways that add value to their businesses and to the communities in which they operate. Through doing so, their goal is to contribute to the sustainable use of land and property assets for the wider good. In November 2007, Upstream was acquired by Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL), one of the largest providers of property services worldwide, who have identified “sustainability” at the centre of their business development strategy. I remain a consultant to them.
My most recent thoughts on this work are contained in a paper entitled Sustaining Value published by JLL in 2008 and I am working on another such paper that explores what it might mean to develop sustainable principles of investment with the property sector. An outline of this is attached in the papers and Articles section of this website.
